Introduction

After twenty years each in the field of professional art conservation Michelle Savant and Larry Shutts established Savant and Shutts Art Conservation in 2017. The firm presently operates out of a small studio in Chamblee, Georgia equipped to perform the highest quality conservation treatment of traditional oil-on-canvas paintings, murals, frames, and three dimensional objects. Savant and Shutts provide examination and treatment, survey, and consultation services to institutional, government, and private collections.

About Us

Larry Shutts

While receiving his B.A. in Art History from Mary Washington College, Larry had his first experience in conservation with an internship in frame and gilt object conservation at Old Gold Studios (Occoquan, VA). Following undergraduate studies, Larry received pre-program training in traditional easel painting and on-site mural conservation with Page Conservation (Washington, DC). He received an M.A. and Certificate of Advance Studies in Art Conservation from the State University College at Buffalo in 2003. His graduate and post-graduate internships and fellowships included The Rochester Museum and Science Center (Rochester, NY), The Henry Ford (Dearborn, MI), The Shelburne Museum (Shelburne, VT) and the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum (Washington, DC). From 2004 to 2010 Larry returned to Page Conservation acting as studio supervisor and senior conservator of paintings. Larry moved to Atlanta in 2010 to be the paintings conservator at the Atlanta Art Conservation Center. In 2017 Larry began Savant & Shutts Art Conservation. In his spare time Larry enjoys working on antique automobiles and producing Daguerreotypes.

Michelle Savant

After receiving her B.A. in Art History from the University of Delaware, Michelle worked in the Byzantine Photograph and Fieldwork Archives of Harvard University's Dumbarton Oaks (Washington, DC). While there she also began her conservation preprogram experience by volunteering with the Textile Museum’s conservators for several years. In 1999 she began working fulltime as the assistant to the object conservator for Art Conservation Services (Baltimore, MD). She received an M.A. and Certificate of Advanced Studies in Art Conservation from the State University College at Buffalo in 2003. Her graduate internships included working on industrial and fine art objects at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum (Washington, DC); decorative glass objects at the Corning Museum of Glass (Corning, NY), and decorative objects made from a variety of materials at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (Philadelphia, PA). From 2004 to 2010 Michelle worked at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. While there she enjoyed treating military history artifacts for the Price of Freedom exhibition, medical artifacts for Whatever Happened to Polio?, and nautical artifacts for the maritime hall On The Water. In 2010 Michelle moved to Atlanta to become the conservator of objects for the Atlanta Art Conservation Center. In 2017 she decided to start Savant & Shutts Art Conservation.
